This article from concierge.com titled "Ten Things Not to Do in New York City" is a must read for anyone planning to visit New York. There are so many things to do in NYC that you really need to cut out some of the unnecessary crap and get to the good stuff. Great tips include:
- Take the Subway - Cabs are stupidly expensive and you just have to ask if you're lost!
- Top of the Rock - Way better views than the Empire State Building and fewer people choose it to jump.
- Cupcakes at Cupcake Cafe - The buttercream is smooth and creamy as opposed to the thick, sugary paste atop the Magnolia Bakery cupcake. While I suppose it might be a novelty to eat the same cupcake Carrie did on Sex and the City, it's just not very good. Though the Magnolia cupcake may be the only thing from that show that's actually affordable to eat.
- A Lower East Side night out - Meatpacking district is fine if you want to put up with the Jersey-shore crew, overpriced drinks, cover charges and serious door drama. The LES on the other hand has an eclectic mix of hipsters and hobos and is a relatively Ed Hardy t-shirt free zone.
I'll let you read the rest. My suggestions?
- The Met and MoMa - The museums get crowded but are totally worth it. Bring a friend or an iPod with a mellow playlist and enjoy.
- Central Park - Also suggested by the article, but if you're with me I will force you to go here! Coffee and treats at Bouchon Bakery and a Sunday mid-morning stroll - ahhhh.
- Brunch - I love people watching and eggs and therefore I love brunch.
Stuff not to do:
- Dress like an idiot - I look around and I'm sure that a lot of these people do not look like this at home, but since they are on vacation suddenly the crazy walking shorts and gleaming white running shoes are out! Just please dress normal.
- Stop and gawk - Nothing is more irritating when I have some place to go and I'm walking with a tunnel-visioned determination when someone decides to stop dead in the middle of the sidewalk to ogle a building or take a photo. If you must do this, move to the side please!
- Eat at a chain restaurant - There are countless amazing restaurants in the city at all price points so DO NOT end up in a TGI Friday's! It'll be there when you get home!
