Lunch At Eddie's Pizza Truck
I received an email from a friend that works around my office that read:
"Eddies pizza truck on 52 & park! I am going to call in my order later. You in? (plain personal bar pie only 280 calories)"
Pizza off a truck for only 280 little calories - YES! Though I had no clue what the hell a "bar pie" was (calzone, pizza shaped like a bar perhaps), I was excited as my experience with the food trucks is somewhat limited. She sent the menu and I was immediately drawn to the lunch special which includes a bar pie with one topping, my choice of side and a drink for only $10. I emailed my order to my friend who was going to call it in - a regular bar pie with spinach, zucchini sticks and a diet coke. In anticipation of my lunch I perused the Eddie's website and realized that the bar pie looks like any normal thin crust pizza.
There are hundred of food trucks all over the city and several parked within blocks of my office building, serving everything from shwarmas to dumplings, but I generally purchase lunch my company subsidized cafeteria. However, everyday I see people lined up at these trucks. New York Magazine recently rated the best food trucks in the city in the latest Eat Cheap issue and while Eddie's is not on there, there are a number of intriguing options (Schnitzel & Things anyone?).
I met my friend at the corner of 55th and Park (sudden change in truck location) and loaded my pie with parmesan and red pepper flakes. We sat in a courtyard across the street to consume our truck food and almost immediately some older dude gazed over and was like "Where'd you get that" in a New York accent of unidentifiable origin. We explained the lunch deal and pointed at the red truck up the street and he told his buddy with enthusiasm "All that is only $10". Then with a hopeful look he said "Sharing is caring!" My friend, god bless her, shot him a "stay away from my pie or I'll throw you under the pizza truck" look and said "Now you're pressing your luck" (brilliant).
The pizza itself was decent on a very thin, almost tortilla-like crust, with just a smattering of marinara, part-skim mozzarella and chopped spinach. The crust was crispy and the sauce was not too sweet. I looked at my friend's pie who had ordered hers with chicken cutlet and was a little disappointed as it looked like they had cut up a chicken finger and tossed on the pizza after it had been baked (that acutally does not sound bad at all). The side of zucchini sticks had a nice crunchy deep-fried batter crust and came with marinara sauce for dipping. My only complaint is that the there were only 4 of them and they were small.
After lunch, we walked past my office building and there was a band playing which is part of the "Celebrate Summer in Midtown" concert series. It's a sunny day out , The Stan Rubin Big Band was playing "Luck Be a Lady" and couples were dancing. Sadly back to work for me *sigh*.
